WOOD, George Stanley

George Stanley Wood was born in Leeds in 1889 to Jeremiah Wood and Annie Settle. He was the second of their seven children, all of whom were alive in 1911. Jeremiah was a ‘Clothing or Tailor’s Cutter’, a trade that his eldest son John also followed. In the 1911 census George, aged twenty-two, gave his occupation as Lithographer. The family first lived in Quarry Street, later moving a short distance to Hartley Grove in Woodhouse in Leeds.

In August 1915 George Wood married Rose Nellie Cotton in Hackney in London and they had a daughter Winifred Rose, born in 1916 in Hackney. When he enlisted he gave his address as Bowes Park in Harringay. He enlisted in the Lancashire Hussars Yeomanry at Hackney Baths. In October 1918 he was Lance Corporal in the 2/1st Regiment which had moved to Ireland in May of that year. This was a training and draft-supplying regiment and it is not known if he was returning from Ireland on leave or to be drafted.

George Wood did not survive the sinking of RMS Leinster on the 10th of October but his body was recovered and he was buried in Grangegorman Military Cemetery in Dublin. His name is recorded on the Memorial in Holy Trinity Church in Hoxton, London.
